It is the second live-action film adaptation of screenwriter Ma Wing-Shing’s manhua Fung Wan, following the 1998 film The Storm Riders. The Storm Warriors is based on Fung Wan′s popular Japanese invasion story arc The Death Battle.

Yen portrays Ma Jun, a police sergeant who plants his friend and partner, Wilson, (Louis Koo) as a mole in a pursuit against a Triad gang led by three Vietnamese brothers.

Seven Swords is a 2005 Hong Kong film directed by Tsui Hark and adapted from the novel Qijian Xia Tianshan by Wuxia writer Liang Yusheng. The movie was the opening film to the 2005 Venice Film Festival and is a homage movie to Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai
