Why Basic Martial Arts Moves Should Be Part of Your Self Defence Program

It is hard to find someone who can utilize martial arts moves effectively in a street fight or so the story goes. In actual fact, it is a myth to suggest that martial arts cannot be used properly in a street attack situation. Like everything else in life, there are good and bad aspects to king-fu, karate and so on just like there are maneuvers that are not suited for an attack by a thug. If you think that an experienced martial artist is not tough, then you will be in for a shock if you decided to try and assault them. If the  advantages of martial arts are used properly you have a serious advantage over your opponent.

First up comes one of the martial arts moves that you should never use on the street. The is the obvious and unnecessary flashy high kick. No less an authority than Bruce Lee stated that such moves were a foolish enterprise in a street fight. Lee was a diligent martial artist but he also knew what to do in a gritty struggle. Even assuming that you are fast and accurate, you are still leaving far too much of yourself open to attack. If you were to telegraph the kick, your opponent could use the opportunity you gave them to sweep your standing leg, leaving you in a vulnerable position on the floor. Either that or they could grab your kicking leg and inflict serious damage on your person.

Using basic martial arts moves on the street is a smart idea. Short, sharp punches and kicks are an ideal way to stop your attacker in their tracks. Experienced martial artists will be able to generate ferocious power in their moves and could dismantle a thug within a few seconds. Certain martial arts practices teach their students combinations. First they kick to the knee then follow this up with a series of devastating hooks and strikes to the ribs, throat and face. The sheer speed and force of these blows is enough to finish off all but the toughest attackers.

If you are intent on incorporating martial arts moves in your self defense regime then you should get yourself into better condition. If you wish to be able to emulate the fast, accurate combination punching of a martial artist then some resistance work with weights and cardio activity are musts. Bodyweight exercises such as sit-ups, push-ups and chin-ups are fabulous ways to strengthen and condition your body. It is also the perfect remedy for those who either don’t wish to enter a gym or else cannot afford a membership.

It is not necessary to be a black belt in order to effectively learn enough martial arts moves to see off an attacker. While you cannot expect to have the speed, precision or power of an expert, you can help yourself by getting into tip-top shape. Always avoid using flashy techniques such as high kicks, instead aiming to maximize the speed and power you possess.
